Shivakumara Swami was the head pontiff of Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru, Karnataka. Known for innumerable philanthropic work, he was the founder of Sri Siddaganga Education Society. In recognition of his humanitarian work, the Swami was conferred with numerous awards and honors. He was recipient of Karnataka Ratna award and Padma Bhushan award.One of the most revered Lingayat seers, he was referred to as Nadedaaduva Devaru (walking God) in the state.
Shivakumara Swami, referred to as Nadedaaduva Devaru (walking God) in Karnataka was born on 1 April 1907 in Veerapura. A great learner with proficiency in Kannada, Sanskrit and English languages, he was chosen the heir to head the Siddaganga Mutt by the incumbent pontiff Uddana Shivayogi. The Swami entered the viraktashram (the monks' order) on 3 March 1930 upon formal initiation. Under his supervision, Siddaganga Mutt expanded manifold. Running 125 educational institutions under the Sree Siddaganga Education Society, the mutt is considered to be one of the richest in Karnataka, wielding considerable social and political influence.
Illness and Death
Lingayat seer Shivakumara Swami was battling a lung infection and had been put on the ventilator. However, all efforts of his recovery proved futile. He left for the heavenly abode on 21 January 2019. He was 111-years old. Condolences from all quarters poured in after news of his death emerged. Both State and national leaders of various political parties mourned his death. Several film stars, industrialists too paid their rich tribute to the departed soul. Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced three-day state mourning after the death of Shivakumara Swami. Many schools and colleges remained shut for a day as a mark of respect to the revered Lingayat seer.
